Why it matters, and the exact steps
Why declare?
- Required for graduation, and ensures it appears on your transcript
- You're assigned a faculty advisor — the earlier you declare, the sooner you get support
- You're added to the department's listserv for scholarships, internships, and jobs
Declaring the Justice Studies Major
- Download the Major Declaration form.
- Check "first major" and "Justice Studies," then sign and date.
- Email it to justice-studies@neiu.edu.
Declaring a Minor
- Download the Minor Declaration form.
- Select "first minor" if you have none yet, check the minor you're declaring, sign and date.
- Email it to justice-studies@neiu.edu.

How to register
- Open neiu.edu/neiuport and log in with your NMail credentials.
- Menu (top-left) → "Student" → "Class Registration Menu" → select your term.
- Click "Register for Classes," select your term again, then "Advanced Search."
- Filter by Subject, Campus, or Attribute (which requirement it fulfills).
- Click "Add" to place a course in your cart (status: "Pending").
- In the Summary box, click "Submit" — this is the step that actually registers you.
How to drop a course
Follow steps 1–4 above, then in the Summary box set the Action to "Web Dropped" and click "Submit." Official guide ↗
Joining or leaving a waitlist
Join: if a course is "FULL," click "Add" anyway, set Action to "Wait List," submit. Email the professor — attending the first class helps. If a seat opens, change status to "Web Registered" and submit.
Leave: set Action to "Web Dropped" and submit.
